What the work involves

- Identify and remove the source material: contaminated pad, saturated insulation, soot-loaded soft goods. Treatment applied over a source that is still there is temporary.
- HEPA air filtration and duct cleaning so the HVAC system stops circulating what you are trying to remove.
- Hydroxyl generators for occupied spaces, or ozone for sealed and unoccupied spaces where the odor load is heavy.
- Thermal fogging on smoke jobs to follow the same path the smoke took into cavities and behind trim.
- Sealing of framing and subfloor with an odor-blocking primer where residue cannot be fully removed.
We will not sell you a treatment as a substitute for removal. If the pad, the insulation, or the soft goods holding the odor are still in the building, a hydroxyl run buys a few weeks and the smell comes back in the first warm stretch. Cigarette residue is the clearest case: that is a full-scope job with duct cleaning, a shellac-based primer, and new paint, and anyone quoting you an ozone treatment for it is quoting the wrong thing.

Meridian was farm ground into the late 1990s. Most of what we're called to is post-2000 construction: PEX, plastic-bodied angle stops, braided appliance connectors, and whole subdivisions whose water heaters reach end of life within a few years of each other.
The builder subdivisions are a mix of slab-on-grade and vented crawlspace. On the crawl homes there's usually a vapor barrier, but it's rarely sealed at the seams or run up the stem wall, so ground moisture still loads the joists and the underside of the subfloor.
Two-story plans here put the laundry on the second floor. A supply hose or a pan drain failure upstairs runs down an interior wall and shows up first in the garage ceiling or a kitchen soffit. Two levels are wet before anyone sees water.
Water heaters in attached garages are the repeat call. No pan, or a pan with a drain line that goes nowhere, and the water tracks under the wall plate into the carpeted room on the other side.
Older Meridian, the original grid around downtown, is a different building entirely: pre-1970 stock on shallow crawlspaces, original drain lines, and cast iron that is finally failing.

What is the difference between ozone and hydroxyl?
Ozone is faster and more aggressive, but it is a lung irritant. The space has to be empty of people, pets, and plants while it runs, and it needs airing out afterward. Hydroxyl generators are slower but safe to run in an occupied space. We pick based on how heavy the odor is and whether you need to stay in the building.
Will the smell come back?
Only if the source is still there. Odor that returns in the first warm week almost always means treated air was the whole plan and the material holding the odor was never removed. When the source comes out and the remaining framing is sealed, it does not return.
Can cigarette smoke be removed from a house?
Yes, but it is a full-scope job, not a treatment. Nicotine residue coats every surface including inside the ductwork and on the back side of trim. It takes surface cleaning, duct cleaning, sealing with a shellac-based primer, and usually new paint. Carpet, pad, and window coverings are typically replaced.
