What the work involves

- Board broken windows, doors, and openings after fire, storm, vehicle impact, or forced entry.
- Install reinforced tarp over damaged roof sections, fastened and sealed to shed water rather than pool it.
- Temporary fencing and access control on structures that are no longer secure.
- Photograph the damage and the mitigation before and after, timestamped for the claim file.
- Coordinate with the roofer, glazier, or general contractor so the temporary work comes off the day the permanent repair goes on.
A tarp buys time and that is all it buys. A properly fastened one holds for a few months, less under snow load or sustained wind, and it does nothing for the shingles underneath. In the late 1990s Star was an agricultural town of a few hundred people. It has been one of the fastest-growing cities in Idaho since, and post-2005 construction covers nearly every address we work, a large share of it post-2020. The failures are new-construction failures: fittings that were never fully crimped, angle stops, and appliance connectors.
The Boise River runs along Star's south edge, and the older acreage north of Highway 44 is still on gravity irrigation. Crawlspaces on those parcels load with ground moisture all summer, which is a different problem than the subdivision calls a mile away.
On a home still inside its builder warranty window we document the source separately from the damage. Who pays for the failed fitting and who pays for the drying are two different conversations, and mixing them costs the homeowner time.

Will insurance pay for board-up and tarping?
Nearly always. Property policies contain a duty to protect the property from further damage, so emergency mitigation is both covered and expected. Failing to secure an open building is one of the few things that can genuinely reduce what a carrier pays on the rest of the claim.
How long can a tarp stay on the roof?
A properly installed tarp holds for a few months, and less than that under snow load or sustained wind. It is holding weather off a roof that still needs replacing, so treat the roofing schedule as the real clock. We inspect ours if that schedule stretches out, and we will tell you when it needs to be re-secured.
