What the work involves
The actual scope, in the order it matters. If a step is missing from someone’s bid, ask them why.
- Put the duct system under negative pressure with a HEPA-filtered collection unit before anything is agitated loose.
- Mechanically agitate supply and return runs with brushes and air whips rather than just pulling a vacuum on an open plenum.
- Clean registers, boots, the return drop, blower housing, and the evaporator coil, where most of the actual restriction lives.
- Apply an antimicrobial inside the system only where a mold or Category 3 job calls for it.
- Photograph runs before and after, so you are looking at your own ductwork rather than a brochure.
For a normal house with no specific problem, routine duct cleaning is optional, and we say that before we quote it. It earns its money after a fire, after a mold remediation, after a remodel, and after a rodent problem. We also do not sell or install HVAC equipment, so if the coil or the blower needs replacing rather than cleaning, that is an HVAC contractor and we have nothing to gain by steering it either way.

In the late 1990s Star was an agricultural town of a few hundred people. It has been one of the fastest-growing cities in Idaho since, and post-2005 construction covers nearly every address we work, a large share of it post-2020. The failures are new-construction failures: fittings that were never fully crimped, angle stops, and appliance connectors.
The Boise River runs along Star's south edge, and the older acreage north of Highway 44 is still on gravity irrigation. Crawlspaces on those parcels load with ground moisture all summer, which is a different problem than the subdivision calls a mile away.
On a home still inside its builder warranty window we document the source separately from the damage. Who pays for the failed fitting and who pays for the drying are two different conversations, and mixing them costs the homeowner time.

Do I actually need my ducts cleaned?

How long does it take?
Most single-system homes are three to five hours depending on the number of runs and how the system is laid out. Multiple systems or a commercial building take longer. We work from the air handler out so nothing that gets loosened ends up back in a clean run.
Will it help my allergies?
If there is actual contamination in the system, removing it makes a measurable difference. That means mold on the coil, construction dust, or rodent debris. If the ducts are simply dusty, the honest answer is that evidence for allergy improvement from routine cleaning is mixed, and a better filter and humidity control will do more for you.
